Registration for the 2009 MLA Annual Convention in Philadelphia is now open to the general public. Regular members and nonmembers save $25 by registering before 1 December. Once registered, you may take advantage of discounted hotel and travel options using the MLA Web site. Please see our registration and housing FAQ for answers about registering for the MLA Annual Convention.

The 2009 MLA Convention Program is now available online to MLA members and nonmembers. The Program is searchable by participant, subject, meeting type, and keyword.

A PDF of the 2009 convention guide  is now available to download.

Online Ballots for 2009 Elections and Ratification Vote

Both of this year's ballots—the 2009 MLA election ballot (covering elections for second vice president, the Executive Council, the Delegate Assembly, and the division executive committees) and the ratification ballot (covering two actions taken by the 2008 Delegate Assembly) will remain available in the members-only area of the MLA Web site through 10 December. All 2009 MLA members are encouraged to log in and vote.


Suggesting Members for Committee Appointments

When the Executive Council meets in February, it will make appointments to a number of the standing committees of the association. Through 5 February, members are invited to suggest themselves or other members for appointment.


The MLA Survey of Course Enrollments in Languages Other Than English, Fall 2009

The survey of language course enrollments for fall 2009 is now under way. Directors of institutional research, registrars, and deans of enrollment may submit data here.

A collection of resources designed to help all members of the academic community advocate for the right working conditions for faculty members and the ideal learning environment for students. The kit includes two MLA reports published in December 2008: "Education in the Balance: A Report on the Academic Workforce in English" and "Demography of the Faculty: A Statistical Portrait of English and Foreign Languages."


Maps The MLA Language Map and its Data Center provide information about more than 47,000,000 people in the United States who speak languages other than English at home.

The Data Center now includes information from the 2005 American Community Survey, allowing for comparison between 2005 and 2000 data for 30 languages at national, regional, and state levels.
